Mark Levy in Concert

Sunday, July 27, 7:30pm

From the early Chalutzim (pioneers) in Palestine to the latest rock, we'll sample the music of the Jewish state and learn how it develops from the polyglot of settlers and musical idioms of the early 20th century to the vibrant mix of 21st century Worldbeat and Rock.

About Mark...
Mark Levy has performed and taught in the San Francisco Bay area for 30 years at temples, JCC's, Lehrhaus Judaica, Workmen's Circle, and other Jewish groups. He has appeared throughout the country and abroad and is a singer and lecturer who specializes in older Judaic folk music in Yiddish, Hebrew, and Ladino, Klezmer history and theory, and Jewish music history in general. He has performed for Yeshiva University Sephardic Dept.'s Semana Sepharad in New York, and is a cantorial soloist in California. He recently released a fourth album of Jewish music entitled Bin Ikh Mir A Shnayderl: Yiddish Work Songs, in commemoration of the 100th birthday of Workmen's Circle, a fraternal order of Jewish workers and their families.

LECTURE SERIES
Who wrote Hatikvah, Hava Nagila? Who was the father of Hebrew folk song? What composer was the "first lady" of Israeli song? What is the origin of all those Israeli folk dance melodies? These questions are all answered in a multi-media presentation.

Monday, July 28, Lecture 1
7:30 pm, JCC Rockland
Seeds and Roots

When the First Aliyah of Russian and Polish Jews in the 1880's arrived, the music of the Mizrahi (Middle Eastern) and Sephardic Jews, Bedouin, Druz and Palestinians permeated the Holy Land. Listen to the music that greeted the eastern European Chalutzim.

Tuesday, July 29, Lecture 2
7:30 pm, JCC Rockland
The Early Songs of First Four Aliyot(Emigrations) to Palestine

With the arrival of the first aliyot (migrations), Russian, Yiddish, and Chassidic music is introduced into pre-statehood Palestine as successive waves of immigration continue through the first half of the 20th century.

Wednesday, July 30, Lecture 3
2:30 pm, JCC Rockland
The Early Composers of Israeli Folk Song

A synthesis of east and west develops and continues with the early generation of songwriters and composers, some of whom were born in Palestine, and some who came in as youngsters during the first three decades of the 20th century.

Thursday, July 31, Lecture 4
2:30 pm, JCC Rockland
Statehood and Modern Times

With the creation of the state of Israel, Hebrew becomes the official language, both spoken and written. Songs from the military struggles, and in celebration of statehood quickly spread throughout the land. Composers adopt and synthesize musical styles from the US into the 21st century.

This program is supported by the Walter Block Memorial Endowment Fund.
